The Summer Mask: Navigating High-Functioning Depression When Everyone Else is "Thriving"
We tackle the myth that seasonal depression only happens in the winter. Learn more about the specific exhaustion of masking your burnout during the summer months, smiling through family cookouts, forcing yourself to attend bottomless brunches, and the heavy guilt of just wanting to stay in the AC and rest while your timeline is filled with vacations.
The Pressure of the "Perfect Summer"
Summer brings an immense, unspoken social pressure.
Your timeline is suddenly flooded with group vacations, bottomless brunches, and the cultural expectation to constantly be "outside" and glowing.
But what happens when the weather is beautiful, everyone else seems to be thriving, and internally, you just feel completely numb?
For the millennial women we see here at AWA Counseling, the pressure to have a "picture-perfect" summer can be incredibly isolating, especially when you are already running on fumes.
Over-Functioning as a Shield
Mainstream mental health often paints depression as staying in bed all day with the blinds drawn. But for many Black and Brown women, the "Strong Black Woman" schema doesn't take a summer vacation. High-functioning depression in summer rarely looks like doing nothing; in fact, it usually looks like over-functioning.
It is planning all the group trips, hosting the family cookouts, and keeping your itinerary so relentlessly packed that you never have to slow down and actually feel the internal exhaustion. You mask your burnout with productivity. But behind that mask is a never-ending loop of "what-ifs," family expectations, and the constant, draining pressure to prove your worth.
The Exhaustion of Masking Depression
Black women's mental health is impacted when the expectation to be the strong, capable organizer doesn't take a summer vacation. Just because the season changes does not mean the demands of Black womanhood takes a vacation. Often times there can be even more overload in summer month. This exhaustion is one we dont’ talk about enough.
But when we do what to carve out some time for ourselves there can be profound guilt that can leave you feeling trapped. The feeling of wanting to stay in the AC and sleep, but fearing you are "wasting" the summer or failing at self-care.
Somatic Tools for Low-Stimulation Rest (Without the Guilt)
We have to normalize wanting to stay inside the AC without feeling like you are "wasting" the summer. Here is how you can gently give your nervous system the low-stimulation rest it craves:
Tool 1: Re-framing "The Dark Room": Explain clinically why the nervous system sometimes needs cold air, dim lights, and quiet to down-regulate. It’s not "wasting the day"; it is active somatic healing from summer burnout.
Tool 2: The Body's "Yes" vs. "No": A quick somatic check-in before RSVPing to an event. Teaching clients to feel the difference between a joyful, expansive body response and a tight, anxiety-driven "masking" yes.
Tool 3: Micro-Dosing the Outdoors: You don’t need to attend a crowded rooftop party to get sunlight. Validate quiet, solitary moments (e.g., 10 minutes on the porch with iced tea) as a complete and valid summer activity.
The "Unmasking" Brain Dump: A 5-Minute Reset for High-Functioning Anxiety
To the woman who is "fine" on the outside, but constantly running on the inside: standard, overwhelming to-do lists actually feed your anxiety because they treat every single task like an emergency. That is why I created The "Unmasking" Brain Dump.
This structured, one-page digital worksheet is a cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and psychodynamic tool designed to help you organize the mental noise, quiet the inner perfectionist, and filter your thoughts through radical self-compassion.
How We Quiet the Noise Together (The 4 Quadrants):
The "Loud" Thoughts: Release every single 'to-do,' worry, and 'what-if' screaming for your attention. No organization, no filtering—just get it out.
The Reality Check: Use a gentle CBT filter to separate real, immediate priorities (the next 24 hours) from the anxious noise.
The Perfectionist Filter: A psychodynamic prompt to help you examine: What are you afraid will happen if you pause? Who are you trying to prove your strength to?
The Human Need: Identify one tiny, immediate thing your body or soul needs right now (water, a stretch, or 5 minutes of silence).
