FAQs
Review our most commonly asked questions. If you are still unsure about therapy, you can book a free 15-min consultation call with us today.
-
All sessions are conducted via a secure and easy-to-use telehealth platform, similar to Zoom. Phone sessions can also be conducted on an as needed basis. We are not providing any in-person counseling at this time.
-
The first session will be an initial assessment to discuss your background information, history, and needs for treatment. During this first session, you will have the opportunity to see how therapy will work, review practice policies, ask questions, as well as determine whether or not you are comfortable with the therapist. The therapist will also review your intake forms and screenings with you.
-
Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes. Depending on individual need, most sessions occur weekly or biweekly. You can discuss with your therapist what is best for you.
-
Typically therapists or counselors have their master’s degree in counseling, and may have additional certifications and specialities through continuing education and training.
While psychologists provide counseling services, they also provide psychological testing for schools, courts, and other entities. Psychologists usually have an advanced clinical degree.
Psychiatrists usually do not provide therapy/counseling services and are typically available for medication management. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in behavior. If medication is necessary, it is usually used in conduction with counseling/therapy. Medication therapy is not a replacement for therapy.

You’re not alone. Sometimes therapy misses the mark because the fit, timing, or approach wasn’t right or because the space didn’t feel culturally responsive. At AWA Counseling Services, we start with a free 15-minute consult to match you with a clinician who understands your goals and lived experience. In the first 4–6 weeks, we co-create a clear roadmap: specific goals, session frequency, and skills. We check progress regularly and adjust what’s not working whether that means a different strategy, pace, or therapist.
-
Yes. Your information is protected by HIPAA, and we use encrypted, secure platforms. There are a few legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality, including:
Immediate risk of harm to self or others
Suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elder, or dependent adult
A valid court order
We also support quality care through clinical supervision; if a supervisee or intern is involved, we obtain your consent and limit access to what’s necessary for your care.
-
Feeling anxious about starting is completely normal, especially if you’re used to handling everything on your own. We make the process gentle and predictable:
Before session: brief consult → simple intake → tech check for secure telehealth;
First session: a calm conversation about what brings you in, what relief would look like, and how we’ll pace the work with your nervous system in mind
Your choice, your pace: you can pause, pass, or set boundaries anytime; we’ll never push you to share before you’re ready
Safety & privacy: HIPAA-compliant platform, confidentiality, and clear info on the few legal exceptions
Quick prep tips: choose a private space, use headphones, bring water or a journal, and jot down 1–2 goals (e.g., “sleep better,” “stop people-pleasing at work”). You don’t have to have perfect words; showing up is the work.
Ready when you are. Book your free consult to get matched with a therapist who sees the whole you and supports your next chapter.
