What is Couples Therapy?

What Is Couples Therapy?

At AWA Counseling, we believe in the resilience of couples and the transformative power of connection. Our couples therapy services offer a supportive, culturally affirming space where partners can deepen their understanding of one another, navigate challenges, and grow both individually and together.

Whether you're dating, engaged, married, or navigating a long-term partnership, therapy can help you and your partner work through conflict, rebuild trust, and learn to understand each other more clearly. At AWA Counseling, we support couples at all stages of their relationship journey — from prevention to repair to deeper intimacy.

Common concerns couples bring to therapy:

  • Communication breakdowns

  • Conflict that escalates quickly

  • Emotional disconnection

  • Infidelity or breaches of trust

  • Parenting stress and life transitions

  • Intimacy and sexual concerns

No issue is too small or too big to explore in therapy. If your relationship is feeling stuck, strained, or disconnected, couples therapy can help you realign.

Our Approach to Couples Counseling

At AWA Counseling, our couples therapy process is grounded in culturally responsive care, emotional safety, and practical tools. We help couples:

  • Learn communication strategies that go beyond “I statements”

  • Understand each other's emotional blueprints and triggers

  • Repair after ruptures with compassion, not blame

  • Navigate cultural, generational, and identity dynamics with care

  • Build habits of emotional attunement and accountability

We approach couples counseling through a relational-cultural lens, integrating methods from Imago Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and trauma-informed care. We hold space for both partners’ lived experiences — especially when systems of power, culture, race, or gender shape how you show up in your relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • It depends on your goals and what brings you in. Some couples find clarity after a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll work collaboratively to determine the right fit.

  • Confidentiality in couples therapy means that what is shared in session stays within the therapeutic space — for both partners. We hold the relationship as the client, which means we do not keep individual secrets outside of our shared sessions. If one partner shares something privately that impacts the relationship, we’ll work with them to bring it into the session respectfully. This helps build trust, transparency, and emotional safety for both partners.

  • That’s very common. We meet each partner where they are and create a space that feels safe and welcoming. You’re both invited to explore concerns at your own pace.

  • No. Our role is to support the relationship, not to blame one partner. We focus on understanding each person’s perspective and helping both partners feel seen, heard, and supported.
