How Much Does Therapy Actually Cost in Pennsylvania? A Straight Answer

Navigating therapy costs can feel like learning a completely different language.

The Frustration of Hidden Pricing

You know that frustrating feeling when you seemingly find the answer to what you are searching for online and then you scroll down to find out the costs and it says some really vague like “Price Varies” or “Contact or pricing”.

So annoying right.

Probably because when you finally sit down to search for something that is not what you want to see.

It creates an extra step that you have to complete.

Totally annoying.

When it comes to the cost of Therapy in Pennsylvania, you can generally expect to pay $100 to $175 on average per session for private pay sessions (no using insurance).

I am providing this range for transparency, even though exact numbers fluctuate.

Now let’s talk about what affects this price range and ways to lower your costs.

What Actually Affects the Cost?

Experience Level

One of the biggest things to affect the private pay costs of therapy is the difference between therapist experience level. Rates vary between a Intern Therapist, Pre-Licensed clinician, Newly licensed therapists, and an experienced specialist.

An Intern Therapist is a student in a Masters level program that is completing clinical hours to earn their degree. A lot of private practices supervise these students so they can gain experience as well as offer low cost and sometimes free access to therapy.

A pre-licensed or associate licensed therapist has a Master’s degree and is completing clinical hours towards their licensure but are not fully licensed by the state they are practicing in. In Pennsylvania they are under the supervision of a fully licensed therapist with at least 5 years experience. Their rates ate usually much less as they are gaining more clinical training.

A fully licensed therapist has a lot more experience and may more advanced training and specialties. Their rates are going to be higher due to their experience level and licensure. Specialized, culturally-attuned care (like CBT or EMDR) often requires advanced, ongoing training, which is reflected in the investment and cost of sessions.

Session Length

Therapists in private practice typically have different rates for the length of the sessions. At AWA Counseling Services we offer 30 minutes, 45 minute, and 55 minute sessions each with different price points. Couples therapy sessions or group sessions could also fall between 55 and 75 minutes in length which could also affect costs.

Decoding the Payment Jargon (No Acronyms Allowed)

Navigating therapy costs can feel like learning a completely different language. We want to remove the gatekeeping and make your options as transparent as possible.

Here is a breakdown of what these terms actually mean for your wallet:

Private Pay (also known as "out-of-pocket" or "self-pay") simply means that there is a direct financial agreement between you and your therapist. You pay for your therapy sessions directly, rather than going through an insurance company.

Using Insurance (In-Network vs. Out-of-Network) If you are choosing to use your insurance benefits, here is how the two primary pathways work:

  • In-Network: This means we have a direct contract with your insurance company. You typically only pay a set portion of the session cost.

    • Copay: A flat, predictable fee you pay at each session (for example, $20 or $30).

    • Deductible: The total amount you have to pay out of your own pocket for your medical care for the year before your insurance finally kicks in and starts covering the bills. You may pay the fill contracted rate for sessions before insurance “kicks in”.

    • Coinsurance: Once you've met your deductible, you might pay a percentage of the session cost (like 20%), while your insurance covers the rest. Likely much less than a deductible.

  • Out-of-Network: If we don't have a contract with your specific insurance plan, you pay for your session upfront. We then provide you with a "Superbill." A Superbill is simply a detailed, itemized medical receipt. You can submit this Superbill to your insurance company, and depending on your out-of-network benefits, they may mail you a check to reimburse you for a portion of the session cost.

More Affordable Options

Sliding Scale (Reduced Fee at AWA)

We know that therapy is a significant financial investment, and we want to keep high-quality, culturally-attuned care as accessible as we can. A sliding scale is a reduced session rate offered to clients based on their current income or financial need. To ensure our practice remains sustainable while still serving our community, we offer a limited number of these reduced-fee spots at any given time. We also have an Intern who has a low fee rate to provide even more access to mental health care.

Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)

Many employers offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as part of their benefits package to support your well-being. Think of an EAP as a set number of free, confidential therapy sessions (often between 3 to 8 sessions) completely paid for by your job. We partner with various EAP programs to help you get immediate, short-term support without any out-of-pocket costs to you.

The Return on Investment of Healing

I want to validate that paying for therapy is a very real financial weight, especially when you are already managing the budget and the well-being of everyone else around you.

But I invite you to gently reframe this cost: therapy is a profound investment in your generational healing, your nervous system's ability to finally regulate, and the breaking of exhausting cycles you were handed. Ultimately, it is the investment of finally securing a safe, protected space where you get to put down the armor and no longer have to be "the strong one" for an hour a week.
