The Benefits of Group Therapy: Why Finding Your Village Actually Works
One of the best moments in the group therapy space is when everyone realizes their struggle is not unique.
The Loneliness of Success
You have the degree, the job, the family’s adoration, but internally, you feel alone.
You have been forced to competent for yourself and everyone around. There is no space where you don’t “have it all together”.
And some reason it does not seem like enough. You are constantly pushing forward and never taking the time to acknowledge all you have achievers
This is the plight of high-achieving women, especially women of color.
BUT
What if there was a space where you did not have to have all the answers.
A community of other high-achieving women who get it.
People who speak your language and can come alongside you as your village.
This is exactly what we do in our therapy groups for women. Let’s talk about 4 benefits of group therapy and how building a village works.
Benefit 1: The Magic of the "Me Too" Moment
Relief from Isolation
One of the best moments in the group therapy space is when everyone realizes their struggle is not unique. Sometimes just knowing that others are struggling with the exact same thing is so validating. High achieving women often believe they are alone and that their imposter syndrome or family dynamics are uniquely theirs.
The Somatic Exhale
We don’t just carry our stress in our minds, it also shows up deep within our bodies. It’s the perpetually tight jaw, the shoulders that sit right up by our ears, the shallow chest-breathing, and the chronic stomach knots. It’s the physical armor we put on before we walk out the door, into boardrooms, or even into our own family homes. We are so used to holding our breath and bracing for impact that we don't even realize our nervous systems are stuck in a constant state of "fight or flight."
When you first sit in a group therapy session, that armor is usually still on. You might be physically sitting there, but your body is still bracing. Will they judge me? Will they think I'm failing? Do I have to explain myself here, too?
And then, it happens.
Another high-achieving woman opens her mouth and says the exact, messy, shameful fear you have been carrying in secret. Maybe she says, "I am so tired from being the only one my family calls," or "I feel like a fraud at work and a disappointment at home." In that exact second, before your brain even fully processes her words, your body responds. This is what we call a somatic release.
When you hear your deepest, most hidden fear validated by someone who looks like you and shares your cultural context, your nervous system finally gets the signal that it is safe to power down.
What a Somatic Release Actually Looks Like
The Jaw Unclenches: The subconscious grinding or tension you hold in your face begins to soften.
The Shoulders Drop: The literal weight of the "Strong Black Woman" schema slides off your back, allowing your posture to relax.
The Breath Deepens: You move from shallow, anxious chest-breathing to a deep, diaphragmatic belly breath—often letting out a literal, audible sigh.
The Eyes Well Up: Not necessarily from sadness, but from the overwhelming, physical relief of finally being seen without having to perform or explain.
Benefit 2: Bypassing the "Translation Tax"
I can’t tell you how many times women have literally exhaled when they realized that I, as their therapist looked like them or had a commonality, like being a mom. This allows them to avoid or bypass the time it takes to explain what you mean when you use a certain tone or phrase and when your joking versus when there is pain behind the humor. We call it the “translation tax” and it can be draining to have to navigate how you says things in addition to what to you. It is so important to be guided by culturally-attuned therapists. For any woman looking for a Black female therapist in Delaware County, now is the time start bypassing the translation tax.
In a group of your peers, you don't have to explain the nuance of code-switching, micro-aggressions, or cultural expectations placed on you by tight-knit families or eldest daughter drama. You just get to start building your village and healing.
Benefit 3: A Safe "Lab" for Vulnerability
Practicing New Skills
High-achievers are excellent at masking. Group therapy acts as a real-time laboratory to practice setting boundaries, asking for help, and receiving care without having to "perform. The safety of the shared group experiences is curated and a soft landing, for not only being vulnerable but to practice skills that can help you heal. This further deepens the bond of the group.
Mirroring: Watching others navigate their healing journey and process their emotions accelerates your own growth and builds radical self-trust. Sometimes seeing is doing. Observing others who look like you and have similar experiences begin to make changes and learn new skills can also help you start your own process.
Benefit 4: Reclaiming Community Care
Healing in the Village: For Black and Brown folks, healing has historically happened in community, not in isolation. Western wellness often pushes individualism, but if we look back, our survival and rest have always been rooted in community. Group therapy honors those ancestral roots, allowing us to reclaim our village and heal alongside one another.
Accessibility: We also know systemic financial barriers can make mental healthcare feel out of reach. Group therapy is a beautiful because it it a cost-effective way to access high-quality clinical support without the financial strain of individual sessions. You receive expert, culturally-attuned guidance, making consistent, transformative healing genuinely sustainable for your budget.
